- Describe the benefits and drawbacks of European and Native American interaction, including the Columbian Exchange, conflict, and cultural encounters.
- A benefit of when Europens came over to discover new lands was that they met Native Americans who have been living on the land for much longer. So the Native Americans had more insight on the land and how to find resources that the Europeans could benefit from. Through this theory of the natives helping the Europeans trade between the sides became a growing benefit for the Europeans because they would trade land and information for little things that the Natives vallued like beads and hunting tools. The Natives were not happy with this because the Europeans came over and started acting like they owned the place when they had just discovered it and the Native Americans had been living there for many generations. Because of this many fights broke out between the Europens and Native Americans that turned very violent and deadly. Neither side thought that they could trust each other anymore since both sides believed they controlled the land. Many issues arouse between the Europeans and Native Americans and one of the major ones was disease. The Native Americans had not have had contact with ouside groups of people up until then and so when they were exposed to this new disease many Natives grew very ill and even died cause of it.
- Explain the points of view of those who were Patriots, Loyalists, and neutral as the English Colonies approached the American Revolution.
- The Patriots leading up to the American Revolution were those who believed that America should be seperated from England's ruling over their land. Patriot wanted to seperate from England because they believed that England could not be able to effectively rule the new land when they were all the way across the sea. They were also sick of England taxing many things that the colonies needed to establish themselves like taxes on legal documents and taxes on tea that was coming from England.
- The Loyalist were those who remained loyal to England while they were over in new lands. They thought that the colonies would grow to be corrupt and could not function and a new country without the help of England. About one third of the population in the colonies wanted to remain under England rule while another third were for seperating away from England. The other third was undecided and wanted to stay neutral fearing the revolution that would later come.
- The final third of the population were considered neutral to both sides. The main reasons why they did not take a side before the revolution was because they were afraid of what the outcome of it would be. If they took sides with the Patriots and they lost the war they would all be considered traitors and could be sentences to death. And on the other side of the war if they sided with the Loyalists they would be disrespected in their communties for not believing in the patriots cause.
- Describe long term causes of the Civil War, in the following areas:
- Economic- Because of their loss after the Civil War many of the Souths lands have been destroyed so they were no longer a large producer of cotton and othe coutries were able to produce more for cheaper. The loss of the war damaged the southern Economy and it took a long time before they were able to grow back from it. The North believed in industrialism and believed that the best way to bring back their economy was to build facotries that would help build their nation and provide jobs for many of the unemployed.
- Social- Many of the social issues that caused the war was because of the issue of slavery. A couple of the issues we have already been over and can be found in the Important Events Tab. One of the issues included the Dred Scott decision because it showed that even though a slave could be free it did not mean that they had equal right as the whites. Another social cause for the war was the publishing of the book Uncle Toms Cabin. The book gave the north hatred toward the south because it showed that the south was being very harsh in the slaves and that slavery was surrounded by violence and corruption. While the book anger the south because the south said that the book was not telling the truth and that it was filled with inaccureate accounts of what slavery was really like.
- Political- Political issues that surrounded the start of the war also included the issue of slavery. The North believed in the freeing of slaves while the south did not and ended up developing their own form of government compared to the north. Some of the events leading up to this included the Lincoln-Douglas debates that showed different views on the topic of slavery and that it should be left up to the people of the state to decide wheather they would allow slavery to happen in their state. Another Cause was the election of Lincoln for president. Lincoln was a strong abolitionist and it was one of the first topics he wanted to carryout as president after keeping the Union together.
