Long Term Events that Caused the War
-Dred Scott Decision helped start the war because it question the power blacks had in the north even if they were free, because Dred Scott thought that since he was in the Northern states, where they outlawed slavery, he was a free man and tried to sue for his freedom. The Supreme Court did not even accept his case because he was a black man that was still a slave to his owner and the North did not want to interfere with the southern political systems
-Uncle Tom's Cabin contributed to the start of the Civil War because it increased the Tensions between the Northern and Southern states. Uncle Toms Cabin depicted the lives of slaves in the south and what they had to go through including harsh conditions and violence from their slave masters. The North found this evil that the south would do this so they built up a hatred for what the south was doing. The South was angered by the publication of this book because they believed that the book was not telling the truth about what was happening and they were trying to make the south look bad, which made the south dislike the north.
-Compromise of 1850 helped to start the by building tensions between the two sides because they were trying to figure out what to do with the newly aquired land that they had got from the Mexican-American War. They each state wanted one part and they could not agree on certain land territories that they both wanted and wheather it would be a free or slave state.
-Lincoln's election was a major factor in helping to increase tensions in the southern states. Lincoln's goal after he bacame president was to stop the expasion of slavery since he was and abolitionist. Lincoln was more concerned at first about the containemt of slavery to just the southern sates and trying to not let it expand past that, so he was not at first for abolishing the slavery in the south. So over time little by little Lincoln grew more powerful to stop slavery a little bit at a time.
-Fort Sumter could be considered one of the most biggest events that helped trigger the war. Fort Sumter was under Union control even when the it's state had been claimed as a Confederate State. The union forces that were stationed at the fort in Charleston Harbor were unwilling to give up their fort and the next day confederate troops opened fire on it. No body was killed in the firing but the Union troops stationed there had no choice but to surrender it because they were almost cut off from the rest of their Nation now that Confederates had taken control of it. Fort Sumter could be considered on of the first non official battles of the Civil War.
