Map of the Union and Confederate States 1861
The North and South States had many different views on economy and rights of the African-Americans. The South believed in making its money from crops and goods that they send to England, cotton was a major crop of the south that would be maintained my African- American slaves that would work on plantations. After the Uncle Tom's Cabin was published England realized the way that the cotton would be maintained and the harsh conditions that the slaves had to endure. These conditions made many slaves try to escape by the Underground Railroad that wasn't literally a railroad but a path for runaway slaves to try and make it to the North and escape slavery. The Northern states believed in the building of factories and the manufacturing of steel and other rising products that would help build the country by following the idea from sea to shining sea also known as the Manifest Destiny. The north's views did not aprove of slavery but they did not realize the African Americans as having equal rights as the Whites which meant that even though you may be living in Union States you could still be treated poorly. There were also disputed states that couldn't agree on wheather to be apart of the Union States or Confederate States. The reason they were disputed was because they left the power of choice to the people.
